Solution

RBCs or Red blood corpuscles:

  1. RBCs are also called erythrocytes and constitute about 98-99% of the formed elements.
  2. They appear red in color as they contain the protein hemoglobin which is responsible for carrying oxygen to various tissues.
  3. RBCs also carry carbon dioxide to the lungs from which it is exhaled.

WBCs or White blood corpuscles:

  1. They are the infection-fighting cells whose number ranges from 6000-8000mm3of blood.
  2. They are colorless as they lack hemoglobin.

Red blood cells

White blood cells

  • RBCs are biconcave in shape and measure about 7-8 micrometers
  • WBCs are round to amoeboid (irregular) in shape and measure about 7-15 micrometers.
  • They lack nucleus and other organelles for a maximum accommodation of hemoglobin to increase the oxygen-carrying capacity
