Question

Write down five general properties of solids, liquids and gases.

Solution

Properties of solids:

  1. Particles are tightly packed.
  2. The interaction between the particles is high in solids.
  3. So there is minimum intermolecular space between the particles in solids.
  4. They have the strongest intermolecular force of attraction.
  5. So solids are the least compressible and rigid
  6. Hence, solids have a definite shape and volume.

Properties of liquids:

  1. Particles are more loosely packed than solids.
  2. In the case of liquids, there is an intermediate force of interaction between the particles.
  3. So the inter-molecular distance in liquids lies in between solids and gases
  4. The intermolecular force of attraction is less than that of solids.
  5. Liquids have no definite shape.
  6. They will take the shape of the container they occupy.

Properties of gases:

  1. In gases, molecules are loosely packed.
  2. The intermolecular distance between the particle is maximum in gases.
  3. The interaction between the molecules is minimum in gases.
  4. The force of attraction between the molecules is the least.
  5. So gases are easily compressible.
  6. Gases have no definite shape or volume.
  7. The molecules move independently.
