Transpiration is the process of loss of water by leaves through evaporation. This occurs via stomata.
Stomata are small pores surrounded by guard cells present in leaves. Opening and closure of these pores are determined by the turgidity of guard cells.
Less than 1% of water is used for photosynthesis and the remaining is released by transpiration.
Xylem compensates for the loss of water through stomata by increasing the absorption of fluids. Pull of water to larger heights due to transpiration is called transpiration pull.
Thus transpiration also plays an important role in the absorption and distribution of water and minerals to all plant parts.
