In the pre colonial period, many people survived on hunting of deer, partridges and other small animals. Even hunting was symbolic of power and prestige by the Indian rulers like Mughals.
In the colonial period, the forest laws prohibited the villagers from hunting , those who were caught hunting were punished for poaching. The British however encouraged hunting as a big sport. They felt that the wild animals were savage, wild and primitive, that they had to be killed. The scale of hunting increased during the British time.
