The Narmada, the largest west flowing river of the Peninsula, rises near Amarkantak range of mountains in Madhya Pradesh. Its basin extends over states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh. drains into the Arabian Sea through the Gulf of Khambhat. The major part of the basin is covered with agriculture.
Tapi basin is situated in the northern part of the Deccan Plateau. The basin extends over states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. It originates near Multai reserve forest in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh. The hilly region of the basin is well forested while the plains are broad and fertile areas suitable for cultivation.
