Question

Write the balanced chemical equation for the following:

The action of Hydrochloric acid on Sodium bicarbonate.

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Reacting the given molecules:

  • When Hydrochloric acid is added to Metal carbonate/bicarbonate it will form their Metal chloride and water along with Carbon dioxide gas.
  • The Chemical reaction for metal bicarbonate/carbonate with Hydrochloric acid is
  • NaHCO3(s)+HCl(aq)NaCl(s)+H2O(l)+CO2(g)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumbicarbonateacidchloride

Step2: Balancing the chemical equation

  • The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.
  • On the reactant side: 1 Sodium atom from Na2HCO3, 3 Oxygen atom from Na2HCO3,1 Carbon atom from Na2HCO3, 2 Hydrogen atom 1 from Na2HCO3 and 1 from HCl and 1 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Sodium atom from NaCl, 1 Chlorine atoms from NaCl, 1 Carbon atom from CO2, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O and 3 Oxygen atoms from 2 Oxygen atom from CO2 and 1 Oxygen atom from H2O.
  1. The equation is already balanced as we have an equal number of molecules on both sides of the reaction.

Step 3: Balanced chemical equation is as follows:

  1. Balanced reaction of Hydrochloric acid with Sodium bicarbonate is

NaHCO3(s)+HCl(aq)NaCl(s)+H2O(l)+CO2(g)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumbicarbonateacidchloride
