Question

Write the balanced chemical equation when Hydrochloric acid reacts with Sodium Sulphide?

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Reacting to the given molecules:

  • Hydrochloric acid reacts with Sodium Sulphide to form Sodium Chloride and Hydrogen Sulphide.
  • The unbalanced chemical equation can be written as:
  • Na2S(s)+HCl(aq)NaCl(s)+H2S(g)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumHydrogenDisulphideacidChlorideDisulphide

Step2: Balancing the chemical equation

  • The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.
  • On the reactant side: 2 Sodium atom from Na2S,1 Sulphur atom from Na2S, 1 Hydrogen atom from HCl and 1 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Sodium atom from NaCl, 1 Chlorine atoms from NaCl, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2S and 1 Sulphur atom from H2S.

Step3: Balancing the reactant molecules by multiplying 2 by HCl and 2 by NaCl

  • The chemical reaction is as follows:
  • Na2S(s)+2HCl(aq)2NaCl(s)+H2S(g)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumHydrogenDisulphideacidChlorideDisulphide
  • On the reactant side: 2 Sodium atom from Na2S,1 Sulphur atom from Na2S, 2 Hydrogen atom from HCl and 2 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 2 Sodium atom from NaCl, 2 Chlorine atoms from NaCl, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2S and 1 Sulphur atom from H2S.
  • After multiplication, we have an equal number of molecules on both sides of the reaction.

Step4: Balanced chemical equation is as follows:

  • The chemical reaction is as follows:
  • Na2S(s)+2HCl(aq)2NaCl(s)+H2S(g)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumHydrogenDisulphideacidChlorideDisulphide

Hence, the equation is balanced.
