Question

Write the balanced chemical equation when Hydrochloric acid reacts with Zinc hydroxide?

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Reacting to the given molecules:

  • When Hydrochloric acid reacts with Zinc Hydroxide to form Zinc Chloride and water.
  • The unbalanced chemical equation can be written as:
  • Zn(OH)2(s)+HCl(aq)ZnCl2(aq)+H2O(l)ZincHydrochloricZincHydroxideacidChloride

Step 2: Balancing the chemical equation

  • The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.
  • On the reactant side: 1 Zinc atom from Zn(OH)2, 2 Oxygen atoms from Zn(OH)2 3 Hydrogen atoms from 1 Hydrogen atom from HCl and 2 Hydrogen atoms from Zn(OH)2 and 1 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Zinc atom from ZnCl2, 2 Chlorine atoms from ZnCl2, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O and 1 Oxygen atom from H2O.

Step 3: Balancing the reactant molecules by multiplying 2 by HCl and 2 by H2O.

  • The chemical reaction is as follows:
  • Zn(OH)2(s)+2HCl(aq)ZnCl2(aq)+2H2O(l)ZincHydrochloricZincHydroxideacidChloride
  • On the reactant side: 1 Zinc atom from Zn(OH)2, 2 Oxygen atoms from Zn(OH)2 4 Hydrogen atoms from 2 Hydrogen atom from HCl and 2 Hydrogen atoms from Zn(OH)2 and 2 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Zinc atom from ZnCl2, 2 Chlorine atoms from ZnCl2, 4 Hydrogen atoms from H2O and 2 Oxygen atom from H2O.
  • After multiplication, we have an equal number of molecules on both sides of the reaction.

Step 4: Balanced chemical equation is as follows:

  • Therefore the balanced equation is:
  • Zn(OH)2(s)+2HCl(aq)ZnCl2(aq)+2H2O(l)ZincHydrochloricZincHydroxideacidChloride

Hence, the equation is balanced.
