Question

Write the cell reaction of the following cell

Pt, H2/H+(C1M)(aq) || H2(C2M)(aq)/H2(g) , Pt

Open in App
Solution

This type of electrochemical cells are called as concentration cell. There will be H+ ions in two different concentration and cathode reaction and anode reaction will be same
The left side of the cell diagram represents oxidationn part. So the anode reaction is Hydrogen is oxidized to H+ ions
straight H subscript 2 rightwards arrow 2 straight H to the power of plus subscript left parenthesis straight C 1 straight M right parenthesis end subscript plus 2 straight e to the power of minus
Cathode reaction is H+ ions are reduced to H2
2 H to the power of plus subscript left parenthesis C 2 M right parenthesis end subscript plus 2 e to the power of minus rightwards arrow H subscript 2
The overall reaction is
2 straight H to the power of plus subscript left parenthesis straight C 2 straight M right parenthesis end subscript rightwards arrow 2 straight H to the power of plus subscript left parenthesis straight C 1 straight M right parenthesis end subscript
