The characteristics of perennial and seasonal rivers can be stated thus:

Perennial river:
  • A stream or a river that flows continuously through its river bed year-round is known as a perennial river.
  • These rivers are rain-fed and formed through the melting of glaciers.
  • Examples of perennial rivers: Sutlej, Beas and Ravi.
Seasonal rivers:
  • Rivers or streams that do not flow continuously for the whole year are known as seasonal or non-perennial rivers.
  • They flow abundantly during the monsoon season. They don't flow for at least a part of the year.
  • Examples of seasonal rivers: Ghaggar and Choes.
