Question

Write the chemical equation to represent the ionic dissociation of sodium hydroxide in aqueous medium

Open in App
Solution

sodium hydroxide and water is an exothermic reaction because heat is generated in this reaction --
NaOH(s) + H2O(l) => Na+ + OH- + H20 + HEAT
The question:
What is the reason that the heat is formed in this reaction?
1. the entropy increases i.e. disorder increases this is one suggestion for heat generation
2. the bonds are being broken and the reaction is exothermic
another suggestion for heat generation closer to the answer --Why the bonds are being broken?
Is it because water is polar substance and NaOH is base?
And is NaOH then non-polar that is good explanation as i think

NaOH + H2O = Na+ and OH- ions. The reaction will be Exothermic, where heat will be released. Sodium hydroxide is considered a strong base and as such is able to completely and fully disassociate in aqueous solution. The heat evolved as a result of mixing solid sodium hydroxide with water is due to the the -OH ions incredible stability. Heat is emitted as a result of the chemical species being brought to a lower energy state. This phenomena strong enough that sodium hydroxide crystals act as a powerful desiccant (it readily absorbs moisture from the air).
