Ferric hydroxide forms a hydrophobic sol. Hence it is prepared indirectly by the hydrolysis of ferric chloride with boiling water. The reaction takes place as follows:
$F e C l_{3} + 3 H_{2} O \to F e (O H)_{3} + 3 H C l$
