Solution

Dear student,
Conditions in which grafting is practised are as follows:
1. To repair an injured plant.
2. To produce single tree with superior qualities by grafting a plant with good root absorption qualities and a shoot with good fruit or flower producing qualities.
3. To ensure that certain varieties are able to survive in the harsh soil and climate conditions.
4. To produce plants which bear fruits of different varieties, or flowers of different varieties.
5. In plants like rose, grafting is the only method of propagation for the hybrid varieties formed to maintain the superior hybrid state.

Vascular cambium is important tissue for grafting, as it establishes continuity of vascular elements between the scion and the stock.

Two types of grafting are as follows:
1. Bud grafting: Here a bud is used for grafting. A small incision is made in the stem, and the bud is inserted into it, below the bark. The rest of the shoot is cut off. This method is used for roses, and citrus trees.
2. Whip grafting: In this method, the stock and scion are cut in a transverse manner. They are then joined together and taped to allow the cambium to grow. It is to be kept moisture free, so as to prevent growth of microorganisms. This method is commonly used to propagate grapes.
