Question

Write the formulae and balance the equation

Lead dioxide + Hydrochloric acid Lead chloride + Water + Chlorine

Open in App
Solution

The reaction can be solved in two steps:

  1. Complete the reaction by writing the products.
  2. Balance the equation.

1. Complete the reaction by writing the products:

PbO2(s)+HCl(g)PbCl2(s)+H2O(l)+Cl2(g)(leaddioxide)(hydrochloricacid)(leadchloride)(water)(chlorine)

2. Balancing of the reaction by hit and trial method:

A balanced equation is a chemical reaction equation in which the overall charge and the number of atoms for each element in the reaction are the same for both the reactants and the products.

To balance the chemical equation, begin by multiplying the element or compound which has less number of atoms with a number that would make the number equal on both sides.

PbO2(s)+HCl(g)PbCl2(s)+H2O(l)+Cl2(g)(leaddioxide)(hydrochloricacid)(leadchloride)(water)(chlorine)

Types of atomsNumber of atoms on reactant sideNumber of atoms on product side
Lead11
Hydrogen12
Oxygen21
Chlorine14

Balance the equation by multiplying hydrochloric acid with 2 on reactant side as the number of hydrogen atoms are less on reactant side.

PbO2(s)+2HCl(g)PbCl2(s)+H2O(l)+Cl2(g)(leaddioxide)(hydrochloricacid)(leadchloride)(water)(chlorine)

Types of atomsNumber of atoms on reactant sideNumber of atoms on product side
Lead11
Hydrogen22
Oxygen21
Chlorine24

As the number of atoms are still unequal on both side, multiplying hydrochloric acid with 4 as the number of chlorine atoms arre still not equal on both side.

PbO2(s)+4HCl(g)PbCl2(s)+H2O(l)+Cl2(g)(leaddioxide)(hydrochloricacid)(leadchloride)(water)(chlorine)

Types of atomsNumber of atoms on reactant sideNumber of atoms on product side
Lead11
Hydrogen42
Oxygen21
Chlorine44

As the number of oxygen and hydrogen atoms are less on product side so multiply water with 2.

PbO2(s)+4HCl(g)PbCl2(s)+2H2O(l)+Cl2(g)(leaddioxide)(hydrochloricacid)(leadchloride)(water)(chlorine)

Types of atomsNumber of atoms on reactant sideNumber of atoms on product side
Lead11
Hydrogen44
Oxygen22
Chlorine44

As the number of all the atoms is equal on both sides, the chemical equation is now balanced.

So, the overall complete and balanced chemical equation is

PbO2(s)+4HCl(g)PbCl2(s)+2H2O(l)+Cl2(g)(leaddioxide)(hydrochloricacid)(leadchloride)(water)(chlorine)
