Modes in which insects damage crops:

  1. Insects can cause great damage to crop yield.
  2. Bees are prohibited from pollinating as some insect pests cut parts of the plant that inhibit their growth while other insects suck on cell sap.
  3. Certain insects are also considered bore and they damage the entire crop production.
  4. Insects damage the crop yield in the following modes:
  • Cutting:
  1. There are certain insects that can cut different parts of the plants such as fruits, leaves, flowers, etc. thus causing damaging the plant.
  2. The rate of photosynthesis gets lowered due to damaged leaves.
  3. Such damaged flowers lead to lesser production of seeds and grains.
  • Borers:
  1. Certain pests can burrow themselves in specific locations in a plant and live there.
  2. These pests can be stem borers or fruit borers.
  3. These pests utilize resources from plants.
  • Suckers:
  1. Certain insects use their proboscis to suck the cell sap from some parts of the plants.
