Question

Write the number of C and H atoms in a molecule of Decane.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Introduction

Alkane is a saturated hydrocarbon that has Carbon-Carbon and Carbon-Hydrogen atoms that are only connected through single bonds.

The general formula of an alkane is CnH2n+2.

Where, n is the number of Carbon (C) atoms in alkane compound and,

2n+2 tells about the number of Hydrogen (H) atoms in an alkane compound.

Step 2: Determination of number of Carbon atoms:

Dec represents ten-Carbon atom in a compound.

Step 3: Substituting the value of n = 10 in general formula:

The general formula is CnH2n+2

C10H2x10+2=C10H22

The molecular formula of the Decane is C10H22.

Hence, the count of Carbon atom is ten and Hydrogen is twenty two.
