Solution

  • Atom is represented with its symbol having an atomic number in subscript and mass number in superscript. Symbolic representation is mentioned below :
  • For the given element Mg1224 :
  • Part-1 Find the number of protons, electrons and neutrons:
  • The atomic number (Z) of an element is equal to the total number of protons present in the nucleus of the atom.
  • Atomicnumber=numberofprotons=numberofelectrons(forelectricallyneutralatom)
  • The atomic number of magnesium is 12, so it has 12 protons and hence the number of electrons are also12.
  • The mass number of elements is equal to the sum of the total number of protons and neutrons present in the nucleus of the atom.
  • Massnumber=numberofprotons+numberofneutrons
  • Also, numberofneutrons=massnumber-numberofprotons
  • The number of neutrons in magnesium =24-12=12.
  • Therefore, magnesium has 12protons, 12electrons and 12neutrons.
  • Part-2 Electronic configuration
  • Electronic configuration describes the distribution of electrons in different shells like K,L,M,N....with principal quantum number (n) value 1,2,3,4...respectively. According to formula 2n2, maximum 2 electrons can be filled in Kshell, 8 in L and so on according to the formula. Therefore, an electronic configuration is2,8,2.
