Solution

Definition

An oxide that dissolves in water to give an acid is called an acidic oxide.

Example: CO2

Carbon dioxide(CO2) dissolves in water and slowly reacts with water to produce carbonic acid (H2CO3).

Chemical equation:

H2O(aq)+CO2(g)H2CO3(aq)

Properties of acidic oxides

  • Acidic oxides are compounds that can form an acidic solution when dissolved in water.
  • They are also known as acid anhydrides
  • Acidic oxides are formed when oxygen reacts with non-metals.
  • They react with bases forming a salt.
  • They do not react with acids.
  • Their pH is increased when dissolved in water.
  • They have covalent bonds.
