Question

Write the reaction for the conversion of ethene to chloroethane.

Open in App
Solution

In an organic reaction, the reagent reacts with a reactant molecule to produce an intermediate which is converted into final products.

The organic compounds containing Carbon (C) atoms having double bonds between two Carbon atoms are called unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Ethene (C2H4) contains double bond between the Carbon atoms, so it is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.

A chemical reaction in which two or more reactants react together to form a single larger product is called an addition reaction.

The reaction of Ethene (C2H4) with Hydrogen chloride (HCl) forms Chloroethane (C2H5Cl) as the major product. This reaction is an addition reaction.

The reaction to the conversion of Ethene to Chloroethane is written as:

CH2=CH2+H-ClCH3-CH2-Cl(Ethene)(Hydrogen(Chloroethane)chloride)
