Question

Write the reaction involved in extraction of copper from its ore by the process of electrolytic refining.

Open in App
Solution

In electrolytic refining of Cu metal a setup is arranged in which two electrode are present, one cathode (made up of pure metal) and other one is anode (made up of impure metal).
Both the electrodes are suspended in electrolyte which is the solution of salt of the metal. When current passed, metal ions from the electrolyte deposited at cathode in pure metal form and an equivalent amount of metal dissolve from the anode.
At Anode:- Cu(s)Cu2+(aq)+2e
Cathode:- Cu2++2eCu(s)
