Write the reaction of any three metal oxides with water.

Open in App
Solution

Metal oxides:

  • They are the chemical compounds formed from metal and Oxygen.
  • Based on their acid-base characteristics, they are classified into acidic oxides, basic oxides, neutral oxides, and amphoteric oxides.

Acidic oxides:

  • Acidic oxides are the oxides of nonmetal.
  • They dissolve in water to form acids.
  • Acidic Sulphurdioxide(SO2) reacts with water(H2O) to formSulphurousacid(H2SO3).

SO2(s)Sulphurdioxide+H2OWater(l)H2SO3(aq)Sulphrousacid

  • Similarly Carbondioxide(CO2) reacts with water(H2O) to formCarbonicacid(H2CO3).

CO2(g)Carbondioxide+H2OWater(l)H2CO3(aq)Carbonicacid

Basic oxides:

  • Basic oxides are the oxides of metal.
  • They dissolve in water to form Bases.
  • Basic Calciumoxide(CaO) react with water (H2O) to form the baseCalciumhydroxide.

CaO(s)Calciumoxide+H2O(l)WaterCa(OH)2Calciumhydroxide

  • Similarly Sodiumoxide(Na2O) react with water (H2O) to form the baseSodiumhydroxide.

Na2O(s)Sodiumoxide+H2O(l)Water2NaOHSodiumhydroxide
