(i) Etard reaction

(i) The Étard reaction is a chemical reaction that involves the direct oxidation of an aromatic or heterocyclic bound methyl group to an aldehyde using chromyl chloride. The formation of benzaldehyde from toluene is shown in the above example.

(II) Stephen reaction is preparation of aldehyde from nitrile using tin(II) chloride, hydrochloric acid and quenching the salt with water. The reaction is shown above.
