Question

Write the sequence of energy transformations during the generation of hydroelectric power.

Solution

The sequence of energy transformations during the generation of hydroelectric power is:

The sequence can be understood on basis of the diagram as below:

  1. Dams are built across flowing water (Rivers) to store water (in the reservoir).
  2. A path is laid for the river to be let out. In the path, a turbine (large fan-like structure) is placed in the path of the water exiting from the dam.
  3. Due to the force of water that is let out, the turbines rotate and in turn, the dynamo (generator), connected to the turbine, rotates.
  4. This dynamo rotates and generates electricity. The produced electricity is passed on to the cities through electric lines.

Hence, this is how hydroelectricity is generated.
