Question

Write the structural formula for 3-chlorohexane.

Open in App
Solution

Given the IUPAC name is 3-chlorohexane.

Since the root word is hex, there will be six carbons in the main carbon chain.

The primary suffix is -ane, all the carbon atoms linked with only single bonds in the main carbon chain and the prefix is chloro, so the funtional group is chlorine (-Cl).

The position of the chlorine is on the third carbon (3-chloro).

Therefore the structural formula is CH3CH2CH2CHClCH2CH3.
