Question

Write the sum of geometrical isomer in[Ma2b2c2] complex and stereoisomers in [M(AB)3] complex

Open in App
Solution

Fac and mer isomers:

  • Meridional is referred to as Mer, while facial is fac.
  • In the mer isomer, the identical ligands are on a plane that bisects the polyhedron, whereas, in the fac-isomer, they are on a common face of a polyhedral complex.
  • Although not exclusive to octahedral complexes, this sort of isomerism is highly common in them.

Cis and trans isomers:

  • Alkanes, alkenes, and organic and inorganic compounds all exhibit cis and trans isomerism.
  • When two comparable atoms are on the same side of a double bond in a molecule, they are said to be in a "cis" isomer.
  • Trans isomers, on the other hand, are made up of molecules with two identical atoms positioned on either side of a double bond.
  • Although cis and trans isomers share the same molecular weight and formula, there are several recognized differences between them.

Step 1: Geometrical isomer in[Ma2b2c2]:

  • Geometric isomers are coordination compounds that have the same number and type of atoms and bonds.
  • Geometric isomers in[Ma2b2c2]:
Ma2b2c2 has how many geometrical isomers A 5 B 4 C class 12 chemistry CBSE
  • So geometrical isomers present are = 5

Step 2: Stereoisomers in [M(AB)3]

  • Stereoisomers are isomers with the same composition (that is, the identical parts) but different orientations in space
  • Stereoisomers in [M(AB)3] are mer and fac and their mirror images:
Answer Key to Problem Set 9 - Chem 056 Spring 2005
  • So stereoisomers present are = 4

Step 3: sum of geometrical isomer in[Ma2b2c2] complex and stereoisomers in [M(AB)3] complex

5+4=9
