Meteorological purposes: Being the lightest of all elements, was earlier used in filing air balloons for meteorological work, and these air balloons were used to record temperature, wind speed and air pressure Since hydrogen is highly inflammable it is now replaced by helium which is an inert gas.

Hydrogenation: hydrogen is used in the preparation of Vanaspati ghee. production of Vanaspati ghee from vegetable oil by passing hydrogen through the vegetable oil in presence of a catalyst is called hydrogenation. the catalyst used in the process can be Nickel Platinum or Palladium

Welding of metal: Hydrogen and oxygen are burnt together to produce an oxyhydrogen flame with a temperature of 2800 ° Celsius to 3300 ° Celsius. This flame is used for cutting and welding metals.
