Question

yellow light of wavelength 589 NM is incident on a boundary separating air and glass find the speed wavelength and frequency for reflected lightght and refracted light refractive index of Glass for yellow light is 1.5

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

(i) For reflected light, the light is in the same medium of incidence so the speed is 3 x 108 ms-2 itself.

Wavelength also remains the same, that is 589 nm

Frequency = Velocity/Wavelength = 3 x 108 / 589 x 10-9 = 5.093 x 1014 Hz

(ii)Speed of light in glass = Speed of light in air / refractive index of glass = 3 x 108 / 1.5 = 2 x 108 ms-2

Wavelength of light in glass = Wavelength of light in air / refractive index of glass = 589 / 1/5 = 392.67 nm

 Frequency of light remains constant so it is 5.093 x 1014 Hz itself.
