Question 13
You are provided with two identical metal bars. One out of the two is a magnet. Suggest two ways to identify the magnet.
(1) By suspending the metal bars: Suspend the metal bar freely and allow it to rest. Move the magnet by pushing it slowly in any direction and allow it to come to rest. If it returns to the initial position, then it is magnet otherwise it is simply an iron bar.
(2) By attracting iron filings: Take some iron filings and move the iron bars over these iron filings one by one. If iron filings are attracted very strongly at poles, then it is a magnet and if they are not attracted, then it is simply an iron bar.
