A doctor prescribed a tablet to a patient suffering from iron deficiency. The tablet does not look like iron.

The tablet is not made of iron metal, instead it contains a salt of iron.

Oral iron is given as ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate or amino acid chelate tablets. Tablets cannot look like iron, but contain iron metal in different forms to supplement the deficiency. Iron supplements, also known as iron salts and iron pills, are a number of iron formulations used to treat and prevent iron deficiency including iron deficiency anaemia.

  • Ferrous salts (ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulfate, and ferrous gluconate) are the best absorbed iron supplements and are often considered the standard compared with other iron salts.
