Solution

For refraction through a prism, why does angle of deviation become minimum when angle of incidence equals angle of emergence? - Quora

Step (1) Given:

Angle of deviation, d=45°

Difference between the angles of incidence, angleofincidence-angleofemergence=20°

Step (2) Finding the relation between the angles of incidence:

Let the initial and final angles of incidence (angle of incidence and angle of emergence) be i1andi2

From given,

i1-i2=20°i1+20°=i2

Step (3) Finding the initial angle of incidence:

We know that

d=i1+i2-Abysubstitutingthecorrespondingvalues,weget45=i1+(i1+20)-6045=2i1-4045+40=2i185=2i142.5=i1

Step (4) Finding the final angle of incidence:

i1+20°=i242.5+20=i262.5°=i2

Therefore, the angle of incidence is 62.5°
