Anisole on reaction with HI produces only phenol and methyl iodide. give reason?

Phenyl methyl ether (anisole) CH3OC6H5 reacts with HI to give phenol and methyl iodide because I− ion prefers to combine with the smaller group in order to minimize steric hindrance.
