Solution

Farmers prefer to grow beans and peas in nitrogen-deficient soil:

  1. Beans and peas are leguminous plants and a bacteria called Rhizobium attaches itself to the roots of such plants and form solid globular structures called nodules.
  2. These nodules easily fix atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into ammonia which is the main nitrogen compound used by plants for their growth and development as plants cannot use nitrogen directly from the atmosphere.
  3. Hence, Rhizobium is a very important source of nitrogen in agricultural soils used by farmers in nitrogen-deficient areas.
