Question

Give a balanced chemical equation for CH4 reacting with oxygen gas to produce water and carbon dioxide?

Open in App
Solution

Combustion of methane (CH4):-

  1. Reaction of Hydrocarbons with oxygen, producing carbon dioxide(CO2), heat, and light as the products is called combustion.
  2. When methane (CH4) reacts with oxygen, it produces carbon dioxide and water vapor (H2O).
  3. This reaction is exothermic in nature.
  4. The complete balanced equation is: CH4(g)Methane+2O2(g)OxygenCO2(g)Carbondioxide+2H2O(g)Watervapor.
  5. Also the generalized reaction for the combustion of alkanes are: CnH2n+2Alkane+(3n+1)2O2OxygennCO2(g)Carbondioxide+(n+1)H2O(g)Water
