Question

Glucose is degraded to lactic acid in the liver, how much energy is consumed during the process?

Open in App
Solution

Glucose degraded to lactic acid:

  1. The most important source of energy in the body is glucose.
  2. Glycolysis is the process in which glucose is broken down to produce energy.
  3. Cells skip aerobic respiration and begin anaerobic respiration when there is not enough oxygen in the body, such as during exercise.
  4. After glycolysis is finished, the cells go through lactic acid fermentation without oxygen to create lactic acid.
  5. Glycolysis is the only process that uses energy, that is, 2 ATPs.
  6. In the last step of conversion from pyruvic acid to lactic acid, NAD+ is regenerated, which can be used for another cycle of glycolysis.
