  • The compounds in which the aldehyde functional group is attached to the aromatic ring are known as aromatic aldehydes. Aromatic rings are planar, conjugated, and contain (4n+2)π electrons.
  • The compounds in which the aldehyde functional group is attached to the aliphatic chain are known as aliphatic aldehydes. Aliphatic chains are saturated compounds.
  • Aromatic aldehydes attain stability due to resonance.
  • Resonance does not occur in aliphatic aldehydes as they do not contain a conjugated system.
  • Aromatic aldehydes are less reactive due to their stability.
  • Aliphatic aldehydes are more reactive than aromatic aldehydes.
  • They have a sweet pleasant odour.
  • Aliphatic aldehydes are mostly odourless.
  • There is delocalization of electrons in aromatic aldehydes takes place.
  • No delocalization of electrons is seen in aliphatic aldehydes.
  • Examples of aromatic aldehydes: Benzaldehyde, Salicylaldehyde, etc.
