Conversion of Benzene to Diphenyl:

Step 1: Formation of chlorobenzene

  • When Benzene is undergone a chlorination reaction in presence of anhydrous Aluminium chloride(AlCl3) to form Chlorobenzene:

Step 2: Formation of Diphenyl

  • Now Chlorobenzene formed is then treated with Sodium in presence of dry ether to form Diphenyl.
  • This reaction is called as Wurtz-Fitting reaction:

This conversion of Benzene to Diphenyl is a 2 step reaction.
