How does nutrition take place in Amoeba?

Open in App
Solution

Nutrition in Amoeba:

Amoeba is a unicellular protozoan. Nutrition in Amoeba occurs in the following stages:

  1. Ingestion - The amoeba takes in the food by forming pseudopodia and engulfing it by the process of phagocytosis.
  2. Digestion - The amoeba breaks down the food particles into smaller, soluble size molecules with the help of enzymes
  3. Absorption - The required nutrients are absorbed by the amoeba by the process of diffusion and the undigested part is left behind. Excess food is stored in the cell as starch or lipids.
  4. Assimilation - The process of obtaining and utilizing energy for various life processes is known as assimilation.
  5. Egestion - The undigested food is removed from the body by rupturing the cell membrane.
