Question

How is the endoplasmic reticulum important for membrane biogenesis?

Open in App
Solution

Endoplasmic Reticulum (E.R.):

  1. Endoplasmic reticulum is the most important part of the endomembrane system of a cell.
  2. It is connected to the outer membrane of the nucleus from the inside and joins the plasma membrane from the outside.
  3. Endoplasmic reticulum helps in the production of proteins and lipids.

Membrane biogenesis:
It is the process of the formation of a cell or plasma membrane using proteins and lipids.

Importance of ER in membrane biogenesis:

  1. The ribosomes present on the surface of the rough endoplasmic reticulum that synthesizes and releases proteins.
  2. The membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum aids the process of membrane biogenesis.
  3. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the production of lipids, while the rough endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the synthesis of proteins.
  4. Since the plasma membrane of the cell is mainly composed of lipids and proteins thus, the endoplasmic reticulum plays a very essential role in the process of membrane synthesis i.e., membrane biogenesis.
