How to determine the molecules formed during a combustion reaction?

Consider In a closed container there are 1,962 molecules of C4H10 and 11,700 molecules of O2. The following are the steps to determine the molecules of CO2 produced if a combustion reaction occurs.

  • Write the balanced equation: read the coefficients of the balanced equation in terms
  • of molecules of each
  • Find the limiting reactant using the coefficients of the balanced equation.
  • The limiting reactant is completely used up in the reaction to form the product so use the coefficient ratio of the limiting reactant and product to determine the molecules of product formed.
