Solution

Difference between primary secondary and tertiary amines:

Primary Amines

Secondary Amines

Tertiary Amines

Primary Amines are organic compounds derived from ammonia by the replacement of one Hydrogen atom by organic groups.

For example,CH3NH2Methylamine

Secondary Amines are organic compounds derived from ammonia by the replacement of two Hydrogen atoms with organic groups.

For example,CH32NH2DImethylamine

Tertiary Amines are organic compounds derived from ammonia by the replacement of three Hydrogen atoms with organic groups.

For example,CH33NH2Trimethylamine

On reaction with nitrous acid, it forms primary alcoholCH3CH2NH2Ethylamine+HONONitrousacidCH3CH2OHEthanol+H2OWater+N2Nitrogen

On reaction with nitrous acid, yellow coloured, oily N-nitroso amine is formed

(C2H5)2NHDiethylamine+HONONitrousacid(C2H5)2NN=ON-nitrosodiethylamine+H2OWater

On reaction with nitrous acid, tertiary Amines give salt which on warming decomposes to give nitrosamines and alcohol

(CH3)3NTrimethylamine+HONONitrousacidWarm(CH3)2N-N=ON-nitrosodimethylamine+CH3OHMethanol

Primary amines, on reaction with Chloroform and KOH, Carbylamine is produced.

CH3CH2NH2Ethylamine+CHCl3Chloroform+3KOHPotassiumhydroxideCH3CH2NCEthylisocyanide+3KClPotassiumchloride+3H2Hydrogen

Secondary amines give no reaction with Chloroform and KOH

Tertiary amines give no reaction with Chloroform and KOH

Primary amines on reaction with Acetyl chloride, N-alkyl acetamide is formed.

Secondary amines on reaction with Acetyl chloride, N, N-dialkyl acetamide is formed.

Tertiary amines give no reaction with Acetyl chloride.
Primary amines on reaction with CS2 and HgCl, Alkyl isothiocyanate is formed.

Secondary amines gives no reaction with CS2 and HgCl.

Tertiary amines give no reaction with CS2 and HgCl
