Solution

Conversion of Ethanol to Ethene:

  • Ethene: It is one of the simplest alkenes, a colorless gaseous organic compound with the chemical formula (C2H4).
  • Ethanol: Ethanol is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with the chemical formula C2H6O.
  • Ethanol (CH3-CH2-OH) is formed when Ethene (CH2=CH2) is heated at 443K with an excess of concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4).
  • It is called a dehydration reaction.
  • The reaction proceeds as follows:

CH3-CH2-OHConc.H2SO4CH2=CH2+H2O

Thus, this is how Ethene is converted into Ethanol.
