Question

In a transformer, the output current and voltage are respectively 4A and 20V. If the ratio of the number of turns in the primary to secondary is 2:1 what is the input current and voltage?

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Let NP be the number of turns of the primary coil, VP be the voltage across the primary coil and IP be the current flowing through the primary coil.

Let NS be the number of turns of the secondary coil, VS be the voltage across the secondary coil and IS be the current flowing through the secondary coil.

We know that,

NSNP=IPIS=VSVP

It is given that,

NPNS=21,VS=20V and IS=4A

Step 2: Calculate the input voltage and current

Upon substituting this in the given equation we get,

VP=NPNS×VS

=21×20

=40V

Again,

IP=NSNP×IS

=12×4

=2A

Hence, the input current of the transformer is 2A and the input voltage of the transformer is 40V.
