Ag2O is a mild oxidizing agent.
Mild oxidizing agents do not fully oxidize alcohol to carboxylic acids. However, the reaction will be stopped at ketone only.
An oxidizing agent is a chemical species that appears to oxidize other compounds, causing them to lose electrons and thereby increase their oxidation state. Common examples of oxidizing agent,
- Halogens like chlorine and fluorine
- Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
