Question

Is deforestation associated with global warming? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Forests serve as a carbon sink by absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. Since carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, deforestation is a direct contributor to the greenhouse effect and (consequently) global warming.

  • Deforestation facilitates the generation of raw material for a wide range of industries. Examples include the agriculture industry, the wood industry, and the construction industry
  • .One of the leading causes of deforestation is agriculture and cattle grazing. Forest land is frequently cleared and transformed into agricultural land in order to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for food (which can, in turn, be linked to overpopulation).
  • Deforestation results in decreased number of trees leading to accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere traps heat rays reflected by the earth which results in global warming.
