Solution

Ethanol:

  • Ethanol is known as the byproduct of plant fermentation which is produced by hydration of Ethylene.
  • Ethanol is mostly volatile and flammable and is also called as the grain alcohol, drinking alcohol or spirits.
  • It is a colourless liquid having odour. The hydrocarbon part in ethanol provides its non-polar nature. As a result, it is possible for it to dissolve non-polar substances as well.

The functional group present in Ethanol:

  • From the studied IUPAC Nomenclature , we can say that the word ‘Eth’ refers to the presence of two Carbon units while the word ‘ol’ is used for presence of the, “Alcohol” where the functional group present is -OH.
  • The Alcohol group present in Ethanol provides the polar nature to the molecule, which describes why it is dissolve many ionic compounds.

Hence, the functional group present in Ethanol is Alcohol(-OH).
