What Happens When DNA is Exposed to Radiation?

High energy radiation, such as the ones containing ionizing radiation can alter or even destroy the DNA. When this happens, the cells are unable to carry out any of their life-sustaining activities as the instructions are destroyed. For instance, an individual exposed to a lethal dose of radiation will quickly die as their systems will start to fail and shutdown. There is no cure as the damage is done at the molecular level.
