What happens when the common salt is dissolved in the water?

Open in App
Solution

Sodium chloride

  • Sodium chloride is commonly known as common salt and has the formula, Sodium chloride is an ionic compound commonly known as common salt and its formula is NaCl
  • This ionic compound is composed of giving one electron to a chlorine atom and forming Na+cation (sodium ion) and taking of electron from sodium to form Cl-anion(chloride ion) to make sodium chloride compound.

Dissolution of common salt in water

  • When common salt is mixed with water, the salt gets dissolved in water giving a homogenous mixture of salt and water. When common salt is dissolved in water, water molecules pull the sodium and chloride ions apart, and the ionic bond breaks and these atoms are surrounded by water molecules and make a homogeneous solution.

Dissociation reaction of sodium chloride in water

NaCl(S)Na++Cl-(Sodium(sodiumcation)(chlorideanion)chloride)
