Solution

Chloroplast:

  1. A chloroplast is an organelle that is responsible for photosynthesis, or the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy for growth.
  2. It is found exclusively in plants and algae.
  3. Chloroplast was discovered by Hugo von Mohl in 1837 as discrete bodies within the green plant cell.

Functions of chloroplast:

  1. Chloroplasts are where photosynthesis takes place.
  2. These organelles absorb light energy for photosynthesis within the chloroplast grana.
  3. Photosynthesis occurs in two stages: the light reaction stage and the dark reaction stage, the light reaction step produces ATP and NADPH.
  4. ATP and NADPH produced during light reactions are utilized to make sugar in the dark reaction stage, also known as the Calvin cycle.
