  • Magnesium chloride is an ionic compound that is made up of magnesium Mg2+ and two chloride Cl- ions.
  • The atomic number of magnesium is 12 so its electronic configuration is 1s22s22p63s2.
  • The atomic number of chlorine is 17so its electronic configuration is 1s22s22p63s23p5.
  • As chlorine needs 1electron to attain stable electronic configuration so magnesium donates its two electrons to two chlorine atoms and thus magnesium(Mg2+) and two chloride(Cl-) ions are formed as shown below.
  • Magnesium chloride is formed when oppositely charged magnesium and chloride ions attract each other, so the product so formed is MgCl2.
