Solution

Ecosystem:

An ecosystem can be a functional unit of nature, where living organisms interact among themselves and also with the surrounding physical environment.

The ecosystem consists of:

  1. Biotic components- These are the living components of an ecosystem, for example- plants, animals, bacteria, etc.
  2. Abiotic components- These are physical and chemical factors of the ecosystem which help living organisms, for example- air, sunlight, water, etc.
  3. Biotic components are divided into three categories-
  • Producers(autotrophs)- They can produce their own food from energy, for example - plants.
  • Consumers(heterotrophs)- They depend on the producers for their food, for example- humans, cows, birds, etc.
  • Decomposers(detritivores)- They break down organic matter and convert those into nitrogen and carbon dioxide, for example- bacteria and fungi.
